Yes, I am back. Finally some consistency :P

Book Review- A dog's purpose 5/5

As you guys should know by now, I don't just give the full 5 stars easily. Although, this may be a biased one.

I would admit that unlike many readers of W Bruce Cameron's, I had never heard of him before I watched a movie a few months ago in the cinema and saw the trailer for a dog's purpose. I was instantly connected to the movie and I remember making a mental note to watch the movie when it got out. Not long later, I found out it was based on a book and I immediately put the idea to catch the movie on hold.

Based on personal accounts, I have always hated (it is a big word) but yes, I have always hated the movie versions of books thus far. None of them have matched up to the book. Which is annoying. Can't say I really blame them, to fit a 400 page long or so novel, which could span over a few decades of events into a 1 and a half hour movie is pretty challenging. But yeah, movie versions have never been my thing.

First of, I would like to say that I enjoyed every bit of the book. I am not going to dive into specific details just in case you are planning to read it as well. Cameron managed to capture a realistic POV of a dog. I could relate to it because I used to have a dog as well, and many emotions are somewhat similar. The book gave me a lot of hope that my dog is out there some where, and wherever he is, he should be happy. It came at the right time as I have been thinking about him a lot, recently especially.

There is one phrase from the book which made me feel a little sad, but it is the truth anyway, and that is : "Dogs are not allowed to choose where they live; my fate would be decided by people. But nonetheless felt torn inside, conflicted." Hopefully dogs don't have to go through rough and irresponsible hands because their lives are on our shoulders the minute we choose to bring them home.

It was refreshing to read a book from the eyes of a dog, Cameron managed to bring out the strengths, innocence and loyalty of a dog beautifully and flawlessly. As we all know, dogs are loyal to a fault and that's exactly what I shut my eyes last night thinking about. (caught part of the movie last night, that's why) Not everyone will like you on days where you lose your shit. But your dog will.

Cameron has a few other books as well, I gave the summaries a rough read and it seems to be about dogs as well. I don't know if I will jump on the bandwagon and say that I am going to become an avid fan from now onwards. Lol. I am still trying to digest the whole book and dissect my personal emotions from it. So better to let it calm down before I dive into another book and send myself on another emotional roller coaster.

This book is DEFINITELY recommended for dog lovers. Whether or not you have a dog, and especially if you have loved and lost a dog, for whatever reasons. Believe me when I say, it will make you feel a lot better. Sad, but mostly comforting.

Kirkus Reviews summed it up well with a comment - "Marley & Me combined with Tuesdays with Morrie."

Read it.

Oh yeah, I caught the first 20 minutes or so of the movie after reading the book. Already, there were so many things about the movie version which were so different from the book. Proved my point. I will however watch it till the end one day, cause hello? Dogs? Need I say more?

P.s. Maybe I should read Gone Girl instead cause unlike the majority, I wasn't impressed with the movie.

Also, POV = point of view. (work hazard, Sorry :P)

Love,

Naia
